- Dwain Lee Architects was Project Architect
for the recently completed "Space" exhibit at the Center
of Science and Industry, or COSI, in Columbus. Working very closely
with COSI Studios' exhibit producers, the extremely interactive
project chronicles the full breadth of the space program and
space research. The exhibit is entered via a bridge through a
blacklit, rotating "Black Hole". Also featured in the
exhibit are air-powered rockets that demonstrate basic concepts
of propulsion, robotic sample-gathering "probes," space
flight simulators, and various other exhibits. A reproduction
of a Mercury space capsule, a favorite from the old COSI, can
also be found here, ready for a new generation of children to
take the controls.
-
- The centerpiece of the exhibit is a two-story
high sculpture, featuring dramatic forms and cantilevers, of
a rocket blasting through clouds of cosmic dust. Underneath,
the sculpture forms a retro-1960's "Living Room" where
visitors can wacth video footage of momentous events from the
space program.
-
- This exhibit opened in conjunction with the
one year anniversary of the grand opening of the new facility
for COSI.
